John Jay, the first Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court and the second Governor of New York, built the Homestead in 1801. Five generations of the Jay family occupied the house until the 1950's. It was acquired by the State of New York in 1958 and was then open to the public each year from April through November. Tours are given Tuesday-Saturday 10 AM- 4 PM and Sunday 11 AM- 4 PM, except during November when the final tour begins at 3 PM. The site is open on weekends during December and on Sundays the remainder of the winter, with a final tour at 3 PM. Admission is $7 adults, $5 senior citizens, and $2 children ages 5-12. This historic site has an interesting and varied calendar of events which include lectures, a Halloween party, Chess Tournament, Herb Fair and Country Fair to mention but a few. Their Friends group was organized in 1977 to provide a source of private funds for projects at the Homestead such as restoration of the Schoolhouse and Barn Complex. There are different categories of membership and annual dues. All are invited to join. An active group of volunteers assist with programs and work behind the scenes on the archives, collections, and research and photography. If you are interested in being a volunteer please call the Homestead.
