The League of Women Voters
Bedford, Lewisboro, North Salem

PO Box 584
Goldens Bridge, NY 10526
763-6036

After women won the right to vote, in order to "finish the fight", they founded the League of Women Voters in 1920. It earned its activist credentials early on as a committed fighter for child labor laws, equal pay for women and other important causes. They were an early advocate for international peace building through the United Nations; a tireless foe of discrimination in education, employment and housing; and strong supporters of action to clean up the environment; and to stop the arms race. Today the League is making a new effort to do something about the distrust and hostility that dominate public debate in America, getting voters to the polls, and opening doors for more women and minorities to be elected to public office. The League welcomes both men and women, and there is a small membership fee. Locally the group holds programs of public interest, Candidate's Night and voter service. Board meetings are usually held on the second Tuesday of the month at the Bedford Village Library.
