For membership in the Nature Conservancy there is a basic fee of $35. The Conservancy is a private, international, non-profit organization established in 1951. Its mission is to preserve plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life, by protecting the lands and water they need to survive. To date, the Conservancy, and its 1 million members have protected more than 10 million acres in the U.S. The eastern New York chapter manages over 30,000 acres and owns 60 preserves. This chapter is supported through gifts from individuals, foundations and corporations. In Bedford there are four nature preserves: Piney Woods, Mt. Holly Sanctuary , Butler Sanctuary , and Arthur Ketchurn Preserve. If you would like information on becoming a member or a volunteer, call 244-3271. Volunteer work includes preserve maintenance, speaker's bureau, leading hikes, photographic or drawing work and office tasks. Most of the preserves are open for educational and passive recreational use. A preserve guide is available upon request.
