Monthly meetings are held by these gardening enthusiasts at various members' homes. To be considered for a provisional membership you must attend a number of meetings with a person who is a current member. Founded in 1939, by 20 women from northern Westchester, the Rusticus Club was admitted as a member club of the Garden Club of America in 1952. The purpose of the parent group is to stimulate knowledge and love of gardening, to share the advantages of an association by means of educational meetings, conferences, correspondence and publications. Rusticus members attempt to restore, improve and protect the quality of the environment through educational programs and action in the areas of conservation and civic improvement. They installed and now maintain gardens at the Bedford Library and the John Jay Homestead, and have also planted at area schools and in the three hamlets. Some of their meetings are open to the public and at these gatherings they try to encourage concern for and knowledge of conservation issues and sound horticultural practices.
